| A cute little puppy with a huge
bow around his neck, peeping out from a small wicker basket-
this seems like the perfect gift. But think twice… it
may not be one. People may love to cuddle a dog or observe
them from afar but this doesn’t mean that they are ready
for a dog gift. Many may not have the time to look after the
pup or may not have the required finances. Moreover, if you
have gifted a pup to a child or a teenager they may not be
matured enough to handle it.
Whatever the reason for wanting to gift a dog, it would be
best for you to find out if they are interested in having
one and of course prepared for one. Please refer to our Ready
for a Dog page for information on what you should look for.
If you want to gift a dog to a teenager or a child you need
to find out from their parents if they are prepared to take
on the responsibility. Too many dogs have ended up in shelters
because of an ‘unwanted gift’. Dogs add joy to
one’s life, give unconditional love and may even die
for you- they deserve good owners who will take care of them.
Once you are sure someone wants a dog, you can gift them
the dog in the following ways:
Doggy Card: After you have found a good
place from where you can buy the pup, on a card which you
may design as you wish, you can mention that you are gifting
them a pup. Take them along with you when it is convenient
for them and let them choose the pup themselves. This is the
best way as the family can choose the type of dog they would
like to have and at a time that is convenient for them.
Doggy Picture: If you have selected a pup
already (be sure that it is what the family wants), then take
a picture of it and gift it to them. You can then invite them
to pick up the pup at a convenient time.
Doggy Home: If you are part of the same
family and living in the same house, you should be prepared
to share the responsibility of taking care of the dog. If
you are, then you may choose to bring home the cute little
puppy with a bow around his neck peeping out from a small
wicker basket.
Dogs as gifts can be truly gifts or a burden. Ensure that
your dog gift will be accepted, loved and cared for.
