Alternate Names: Atlas Shepherd Dog , Chien de l'Atlas, Kabyle
Dog
Type: Working
Physical Attributes: The Aidi is lean and muscular weighing
around 55 pounds and measuring around 21-25 inches in height.
The head is broad and tapers into a longish muzzle with strong
jaws. The nose, eyes and lips are brown or black in color
and the harsh, dense coat is pale red, black, white, a mixture
of the two colors, or yellowish brown. The hair on the body
is thick and the tail is also covered with a thick growth
of hair.
Disposition: These dogs are on their guard, very protective
and with good scenting powers, therefore making good watchdogs.
They are lively, nimble and full of energy.
Origin: The Aidi breed is believed to have originated from
Morocco, possibly, from the Sahara. They were used to protect
the sheep and goats of the owners. Due to their scenting power,
they were often used to scent out prey which was then hunted
and caught. Even though it was alternately called a sheepdog,
it was never used in this task and therefore is not called
a sheepdog anymore.
Grooming: The Aidi breed has a thick coat, thus requiring
regular combing and brushing of its coat.
Training: The Aidi is quite sensitive and so needs to be
trained with care and firmness. Do not be too harsh while
training.
