Know your Dog better...

Tips on Dog Training

There are a number of techniques that have been used over the ages and you can be as innovative as you want to be. There is no one best method that can promise 100% results as the technique is what you make it to be. You only need to bear a few things in mind:

  • Study your dog’s behavior: Just like us, dogs have their own character and you need to find out what it is. If yours is a hypersensitive dog, you need to be careful before resorting to any kind of negativity with your dog. If your is a strong- willed dog, you may have to show him you are the boss by ensuring that you get him to do what you want him to do. Once you know under which category your dog’s character is, you can tailor your technique so that it plays on his strengths and diminishes his weaknesses.
  • Your behavior: We also need to choose a method that suits our character. Dogs can easily sense the fact that we are bored and the training session can turn into one that is going nowhere. Ensure that you choose an activity that you really enjoy so that it catches on.
  • Getting outside help: If you feel that you are not up to it, get help from experienced trainers. You can either get dog trainers to fully train your dog or get dog trainers to partly train your dog after which you can take over. Even if you get a dog trainer to fully train your dog, reiteration and practice will have to be done by you in your home. Dog trainers provide various services so check out what kind of dog training you would like them to provide you with.

Remember to,

  • Make a list of all the things you want to teach your dog in advance
  • List them out from simple to complex ones
  • Decide what word will be used as the command for that action.
  • Make a plan with dates so that you follow a good schedule.
  • If you are employing a dog trainer, ensure that you tell him exactly what you expect. The dog trainer will tell you what commands he has taught your dog so that you can reiterate them at home but if he does not, do ask. Your dog trainer should also guide you on how to study your dog’s behavior and what pleases or displeases your dog. He should get you to understand how to train and practice with your dog. The character, desires, strengths and weaknesses of a dog changes with time and so it is best that you take on most of the training yourself or you will have to employ a dog trainer throughout the life of your dog.

There are training aids available today to help you with dog training. Special collars and leashes are available but it is best to use these only if required and with a dog trainer’s guidance. This will prevent any accidents or incidents of bad behavior in your dog.

Remember the three R’s of Training- Repetition, Reiteration and Rewards. Remember the two S’ required in you- Steadiness and Serenity. It will not be too long before you have a well behaved dog.
