Know your Dog better...

Dog Clothes

Should I believe my eyes? I see a cute little poodle wearing a pretty frilly dress with its hair nicely tucked into tiny pony tails. Everyone’s attention is drawn to her walking smartly down the road alongside her proud owner.

Dogs wearing dog clothes… this is something that is definitely in. Dog owners get their dogs dressed up for their usual walks, for holiday trips and even for parties.

With many dog shows having fancy dress competitions, it seems sensible to ensure that dogs are comfortable in dog clothes. You may notice that some dogs wear dog clothes with panache while others rip their lovely dog clothes off. What is the trick to make your dog keep his clothes on?

Like any other new thing to be taught to a dog, you need to begin early. Start as soon as possible. You can follow a few simple steps:

  • Dress your pup in his dog clothes when you are spending some time together
  • Ensure that you are constantly praising and patting your dog
  • Keep it on for around 10 minutes
  • Your pup will no doubt try and tug at his clothes but get him to chew his toys instead
  • Over time increase the amount of time he spends in his dog clothes

You will soon have a pup who thinks it is pretty normal to wear clothes and he will not show any signs of feeling uncomfortable. But before you go ahead to begin these lessons, bear the following in mind,

  • Choose clothes that are not too loose nor too tight as these can be uncomfortable
  • Choose clothes that allow your dog to move freely. Avoid to wide frills and long flowing ribbons or anything that gets in the way.
  • Ensure that your dog can urinate and defecate if required without getting their clothes soiled or get his used to a dog diapers.
  • Ensure that dog clothes are washed after every wear.

Most people prefer to have dog clothes like jackets, waist coats and short frocks as these are more comfortable for the dog.
