Know your Dog better...

Building dog house yourself

Taking up the task of buildingyour first dog house is not an easy one. You however need not be an engineer or a carpenter or an architect for building a dog kennel. With proper planning and the right materials and tools you can design and make dogs houses on your own. However it would be a good idea to take help and advice from a neighbor or friend who has made a dog kennel himself.

Materials needed to make dog houses would include lumber, plywood, shingles or other material that will be required for the roof, trim boards, brackets, nails, and screws, bricks and last but not the least - paint and cement. It is advisable to buy more materials than what is actually needed because you may miscalculate at some point.

The tools that are required for building dog houses are: saws, hammers, crowbar, screwdrivers, measuring tape, paint brush or roller, etc. All the materials and tools required to make dogs houses will be available at your local hardware store, if you do not have most of them already.

Once you have an idea of the tools and materials required for building dog houses you need to make a precise plan as this will give you an estimate of the quantity of materials required to build your dog kennel.

The important thing to take into account while building dog houses is your dogs breed and size. The dog should be able to look out of the front entrance while standing up and sitting. Make sure that the entrance way is high enough for your dog to get in comfortably. Your dog house should also be wide enough to accommodate your dog’s girth.

Remember to give the roof of your dog house a slope to facilitate water runoff.

Measure your dog standing straight, sitting and also in her most comfortable and stretched out position. You should build a dog kennel such that your pet can easily attain these positions without feeling cramped. Make sure your dog can get in and out of the dog house safely and be protected from the weather while inside. While you can design your dog kennel in any style you want, remember never to compromise on functionality for the sake of style.

While building dog houses it is very important to consider where you plan on setting it up. Your dog kennel should be situated in a place that is comfortable and safe for your pet and ideal for you as well depending on what your concerns are i.e. do you want your dog house to be hidden from view or prominently displayed. Do keep in mind that weather and climatic conditions in your area will also need to be considered while building your dog kennel. Bearing this in mind will make dogs houses what they are supposed to be- a home.
Once you have determined all of the above you need to draw out the plan for the project with the exact measurements. Once you have your project ready on paper you can get to the task of making your very own dog kennel.

The above tips are basic guidelines to help you in your task of building dog houses.
